The Philosophy of Limits - 1

PREFACE

May peace govern our actions.

Watercolor Bird 1

WHEN I AM ABOUT  to say or write something, I always think much about it.

To the multitude of books and speeches, should we add even more?

The thought, however, that the words of a speech or some sentences in a book have some times helped me solve a problem, consolidate a thought of mine, answer a question - this thought has encouraged me to speak. To say a few words that life has dictated to me. Some words, which I myself have followed first and have seen where they lead to. A few words that I believe.

Someone, who shares same interests with me. Someone, who will desire to talk seriously with himself. Someone who wants to reach his destination. Someone, who has an inner life. Someone, who is not deaf to the voice of consciousness. Someone, who believes in himself. Someone, who can judge. Someone, who takes himself seriously. Someone, who can take responsibility. Someone, whose deeds are congruent. Someone, who knows how to appreciate. Someone, who has the courage to state his opinion. Someone, who tries to stand on his feet without always needing the cane of others. Someone, who will understand that we must not always demolish, but also build. Someone, who will understand that life is not merrymaking, but a very serious matter. Someone, who will feel that amusement exists in order to entertain us and refresh us and is not the purpose of our life. Someone, who sees things as they are. Someone who, in the midst of the galloping flow of progress, will be able to stand. And listen to the demands of a small child, that man carries inside him. Someone, who will obey the high command and will want to take care of and develop this little child, whom he is honored to have been assigned to help and because of that he has received the noble title of human. Someone, who will want to fight in order to protect it against the thousands of dangers that surround it. Someone, who has recognized the value of this child for himself. Someone, who will understand that this child is the immortal part of ourselves and, when we are called to it and become its garment, it will take us with it to immortality. Someone, who will understand that this is our primary task on earth, to take care of this child, and everything else comes after that, and it is for this task that our abilities and the goods that surround us have been given to us. Someone, who will understand that our birth has not been completed by our coming out of the womb of our mother. This is our birth in flesh. And this human flesh contains the materials of a second birth, our spiritual regeneration.

Finally, my words will be needed by someone, who has been able to understand that man moves on a level different from that of the animals. Someone, who has understood that man must look up, look up high.

He will be be able to get some solidarity from the words in this book.

And if there would also be someone, who would be pleased with the form of these words, this would be great for me and for him.

I am not offering anything new with my books, except for the books themselves.

In the spiritual sciences, the last word has been said.

Whoever follows it will always arrive at the same point.

To the composition of some form. To formation.

But although millions of people exist on earth, the birth of a child, of a new form, will always be a joyful event.

The era of the great teachers has left, never to return.

They have left their teachings to us and they expect us to follow them and come to the exams.

The teachers left their teachings to us and promised a happy end to anyone who would follow them. And this, the happy end, is the satisfaction, the acquisition of what is desired, the satiation.

We are now waiting for mankind to follow the teachings and show the results.

But these teachings are not acquired by the usual way of studying.

They are daily action. They are the necessary daily food of man, which will gradually develop him and lead him to the mature age. To that age, when he will be able to give back for the continuation of life, any life. And thus participate in the chain procession of life.

If we do not acquire a form, we cannot offer a form.

And these teachings are acquired by life. By the whole body of man. And their assimilation is slow. And it comes complete. Not in pieces. The child is born whole, not one hand first, or one leg. Therefore it should not surprise us, if we come to the exams in a very advanced age. Nor is it possible to see the results in a young age.

The tests are many and according to the age.

Our care is to arrive at the goal. To the completion of a form.

To not toss about in the chaos with a conscience in our pocket.

No progress would be made in the physical sciences, if we would not take into consideration the laws of nature, if we would not follow the results of the experiments, each time. Not one of us would remain alive, if we would insist on holding fire with our hands, or electric wire in our palm. But why do we remain apathetic before the holocaust of the body of the soul? Our daily personal life, the works of literature of the world, show us this situation in relief. But we continue to believe that it is all about non physical matters, which are not immediately accessible to our senses; that the fire is to blame for the burn and not we, who have put our hands on it. Fire is a natural phenomenon, which repeats itself always the same. We will not change it. And as long as its glow continues to attract us and we insist on catching it with our hands, we will never do anything else than writing dramas and tragedies, without any progress. We will repeat the experiment, the results of which will always be the same, without in any way benefiting from what man has acquired with so much pain and delay in his progress.

Society calls the physicists, because the physicists lead the world today - it calls the physicists to disclose in public, and with a stentorian voice, the method of their work, which has led them to this breathtaking height of progress of the physical sciences, with a perspective of further developments. But it is a common secret and easy for anyone, however far one may stand from the physicist's point of view, to guess the general plan of their way of working.

Commitment to their work in an atmosphere of silence and solitude. Abiding by the laws and obedience to the results of the experiments. With every obstacle they face, they do not ask for the reason it has been placed there, but they try to find the way to overcome it; and when they find it, they follow it and the whole world follows it together with them.

So the physicists go on, totally committed to their work. Let us follow them.

Society calls the physicists to take her with them, for a mutual benefit.

The social body is in danger of being dismembered. The head has been pulled dangerously high and the rest of the body always remains in the same position. A moment will come, when it will be cut off. It will not stand the pull. But this will signify the end of both. Neither the head can live without a body. Nor the body, without a head. Neither the brain can function without a heart. Nor the heart, without a brain. The head has grown and strengthened over too much. But the body withers day by day. We have assigned all our tasks to the head and it is the head that we exercise since tender age, because we rest our life on it. We forgot that we have feet to support us and hands to work. The head cannot support us.

On the other hand, life asks for work, which only the hands are able to do. But also the hands, in order to live, need the work which is appropriate to them. In the era of materialism, as we use to call our times, the body has been completely abandoned. We have condemned it to inactivity while at the same time we besiege it with exhausting hardships. We are not at all interested in it, nor in the materials it needs in order to live. We shut our ears to its daily demands it whispers to us. To the desperate cries it gives out. And we dream of its total inactivity. Naturally, it will be deadened.

We have put the whole weight of the work on the mind. But we have forgotten that the mind is the sovereign. It is not allowed to a sovereign to work manually. The sovereign needs rest and calmness in order to perceive the plan, according to which he will direct the work. He must be free from weights, so that he can stand high. On the other hand, the materials, out of which the mind is made, are very subtle and they cannot stand hard work. They also are completely inappropriate for the service of the body. This sovereign has at his disposal worthy and appropriate workers. The hands. The feet and the whole body. But he tends to ignore them. This will be its destruction.

In the mind the function of thinking is installed. The mind which has been thinking is tired and needs to rest, to wait for the execution of its thought, with the rhythm available in the system to which it is connected: its hands, its feet and the whole body.

It is nobody's fault that we have come to the point to speak about these self-evident things. The flow of things has led us there. But now that we have covered a great distance and we have seen the results of our actions, it is time to stop. In order to make a review. Where we have fallen short, always in ignorance of the results, and where we have worked more than what was appropriate. What we have overdeveloped and what needs to be strengthened, so that the balance and the normal life of society can be established.  We have reached a point of such a distortion of things, that we hear a human mouth saying: "The earth cannot sustain us any more; I want some job in Athens, whatever the salary is". As if we are fed by coins and not by the products of the earth. Of course, the man who has left his fields meant that the life of a the farmer is very difficult. But the sentence, as it sounds, is characteristic of a distortion. A distortion which exists in many things and a distortion that we unconsciously follow as a new situation. Our spiritual origin is from the sky. But the physical one is from the earth. And the single fact, that the sun shines and the earth continues to produce, is enough for us to not worry. It is the safe pedestal, on which we may have a happy life stand.

I COULD GIVE MANY  titles to this book, to this collection of my spiritual works, but I preferred the present one for the following reasons:

In some of my works I speak about limits in particular. But also the setting of all of them is the observance of some limit.

It is known that a study of limits, one by one, is needed, but what we are interested in today is the search for the limits of the body, the soul, the spirit. Also, the search for the limits of the field of action of each one of these. But, in order to arrive there, we must follow the road that leads there. The observance of the limits of daily life, from an early age. One might say, that there is nobody who does not know the limits of the body, so there is no need to speak about them in particular. But the body moves. The arms stretch and, in their ignorance, transgress the soul and the spirit and hinder their function. We think that, since we move our hands, we may move them whenever and wherever we want. And I do not want to speak about instruments we have created, which are huge extensions of our hands, while we do not know how to direct these small hands of ours. Also the mouth talks at times when it should stay quiet. When it is time for the spirit, the soul to speak. And let us not mention where our feet drag us some times, without knowing that they are leading the most venerable baby cart. The carrier of the spirit. The crown of Creation.

Man, or at least most people, seem to ignore these limits completely. That is how they appear in the spiritual creations of the centuries. There are, however, pieces of literature that present man as a perfect knower and deep student of these limits.

Finally, I have included the word "limit" in the title of this book of mine, because, if someone has not have time to read the book or has forgotten all that is written inside it, he can keep only one word, limit. He will get important benefit and the book will have reached its destination.

The observance of limits of time, space and others is the basis of the normal functioning of man and society.

It is also necessary that we be aware of the limits, when we are about to create something physical or spiritual.

    Also, in our daily occupation.

I have published two books. The first is entitled "Home Economics and Its Contribution to the Organization of the Modern State". And the book you are holding now. In these two books there are three works that constitute a trilogy, which completes my spiritual offer to the world.  The other works are elaborations of some points of the basic work.

The three parts, which constitute the trilogy, are: My first book, which has to do with the soul. The work entitled "A dream", which is found in the present book and has to do with the spirit. And the third one is the work entitled "Presence", which has to do with the body and is found in the present book. In each one of these works, the reader will find many elements also of the other aspects of the nature of man.

But so it is in life. We do not meet the body, the soul and the spirit independently the one from the others. All three of them are one substance. That is why a wrong action in the function of one of these aspects affects the others.

However, each one of these aspects of the nature of man is presented with a special appearance.

My work entitled "The Talent Playing" was written on the day after the event mentioned in my first book, when I also saw the picture found in that book. It was written directly, without any processing, and I include it here without any correction.

That event took place on April 22, 1932 in the concert hall of the Hellenic Conservatory, around 9 p.m. during the final exams in piano performance of Ms. Helen Nikolaidou. The room was full, because she was an especially talented pianist. The performance exceeded all expectations. I have recently been informed that her diploma is equal to that of Demetri. Mitropoulos. The "last one", whom I mention that came in the room, was the late Theseus Pindios, who was then Director of the Conservatory.

The atmosphere, which was created when the door closed and all were waiting for the above mentioned person to appear on the stage, was that of an expectation of some great event.

Out of the program I must mention the last piece, "The Carnival of Vienna" by Schumann, when the event took place.

On that night I also was getting my diploma. The diploma of life.

NOW THAT A LIFE  of 50 years is spread in front of me, I can distinguish some completed forms on it. I can understand where some incidents wanted to lead me.   What the successful incubation of the human nature brings to light. What life accomplishes, when it is left to work free.  At an age of under 8 years, I was fervently asking that they buy a doll's piano for me. When I got it, I became the happiest person in the world. On it I learned the notes. On it I played the first melodies. On it I practiced for my first piano lessons at the Conservatory. We were living in Corfu at that time.

When, in the autumn of 1922, a graduate of High School, I was registered at the Hellenic Conservatory of Athens (it is still at 5 Pheidiou Street) for the first time, for piano lessons, they gave us a little book, "Music Rules for Home and Life", by Robert Schumann.

It was a little easy to read book with wise advise. But my eyes and thought remained fixed for a long time on the cover of the book, at a few words written there, which I still remember today. "Without enthusiasm, nothing great is accomplished". "Art is not intended for making money".

Nobody, neither my family nor I, ever thought that I was learning how to play the piano in order to make money. Regarding the uncontrollable enthusiasm I had for music and especially for the piano, I thought but I could not imagine, what could that big something be, where it would lead me to. But I was not much interested in this. I was totally surrendered to my enthusiasm.

The opportunity was given to me to devote all my soul to it without any obstacle. It was during the years, when my 24 hours were all mine. I filled them as I wanted.  Therefore I always remember my home with gratitude, because it gave me this freedom during the years that I needed it.

In this way the great event for me, of April 2, 1932, took place and it gave me a response to my enthusiasm. It gave me the completeness, the satiation.

When, in autumn 1932, I asked myself whether I wanted to continue the piano lessons, I got the answer: No.

The work entitled "Discipline", which is found in both books, is the core.

It became the vessel which accepted and kept all the juices, which sprang out when I arrived at the wholeness of the soul, the maturity of the soul.

It was written after April 22, 1932

All that I am going to say and write is found in it. It has satisfied me completely, as form and as content. This satisfaction denotes the existence of completeness, of wholeness.

But let us not try to find there and present something of my later works. We will be searching in vain to find the feather of the hen inside the egg.

These works are not written with thought only, nor are they understood only with it. They are visions. Out of the frames of what can be known. They are successful perceptions of moments of life in all its dimensions.
